History of the department

EMEA College of Arts and Science, Kondotty was established in the year 1982 as a junior college with pre degree courses. For teaching students of commerce group the department of commerce came into being in 1983 with one faculty member. The second member was appointed in 1984.

In1983 B Com Degree Course was introduced under the Department with Cost Accounting as elective subject. By the end of the first B Com batch the department had inducted 4 more faculty members, one being part time member for teaching law subjects. Thus, since then, it has five permanent and one part time member.

With the introduction of few more elective subjects under B Com Degree Course by University of Calicut, the elective subject Cost Accounting under the department was changed as Travel and Tourism from the academic year 1997-98 onwards. This was done because of the importance of Travel and Tourism industry in the economy of kerala. The elective was again changed as Co-operation in the year 2000-01 due to the demand from the students and the increased employment opportunities in the cooperative institutions of the nearby areas of the college. In the same year B Com vocational stream (Tax Procedure and Practice) was added to the non vocational stream ( with Co-operation as elective subject) existing. The vocational stream was sponsored by the UGC for 5 years. Two guest faculty members were appointed since then to teach the tax subjects of the vocational stream.
